Kieran Moloney Musical Instruments

Kieran Moloney was born and raised in Galway City , into a family steeped in Irish traditional music, traceable back to his Great Grandfather; piper and opera singer James, and Grandfather Stephen of the Balinakill dance band.

His passion for music was instilled by his father Eddie and older brother Sean, both distinguished on flute and fiddle.

Kieran’s career with musical instruments started after finishing secondary school in 1985, his third level education was at the London College of Furniture where he studied a full time diploma course in musical instrument technology, specialising in woodwind instrument construction and design.

In 1989 he was offered an apprenticeship with Tom Cussen at Clareen Banjos, where he gained hands on experience in instrument making and developed a flair for inlaying and engraving.

In 1993 he moved to California USA, and worked for a Musical Instruments distributor in the receiving, quality control and instrument set-up departments. Joining the Northern California Association of Luthiers meant weekends spent at monthly seminars and meetings of NCAL where he met with, and spent time in the workshops of some of the leading guitar builders in the USA.

Eighteen months later Kieran moved back to Ireland and began to work under violin maker Kevin Sykes in High Street, Galway . Kevin moved his main workshop to Ballyvarry Co. Mayo in September 1996.

At that point Kieran stayed on at the High Street premises and established his current business, focusing on honing his skills in stringed instrument repairing and modification, and offering high quality instruments for sale.

Customers range from beginners to well known professionals across all genres of music; trad, classical, jazz, rock, folk, country, punk, etc.
